Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions:

1) Who is eligible to apply for the Gerda Prize?

Opera singers, who have completed school and who are ready for an international career
in opera, may apply for the annual competition.


2) What is the age limit for applicants?
The General Competition is open to singers aged 21-35. The Wagnerian Singer Competition is open to singers aged 25-40.


3) When is the deadline?
The deadline varies from year to year. For the 2007-2008 competition, the (postmark)
deadline is Monday, October 1, 2007.


4) What is a postmark deadline?
A postmark deadline means that an application needs to be in the mail (or postmarked)
by deadline date; it does not need to arrive at the foundation by that date.


5) When will I hear if I am a finalist?
We notify all applicants in late November or early December.


6) Can I get my recording or photos back?
Yes. Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope with the appropriate postage and
a note letting us know what you want returned.


7) Is there an application fee?
No, there is no fee.


Recording Questions:

1) What forms of recording are accepted?
The foundation accepts audiotapes, VHS videotapes (NTSC format only), CDs, and DVDs.
Please copy the CDs so that they can be played on a CD player. The foundation does not
accept electronic submissions.


2) What should I put on my recording?
Please send opera arias only. Do not send duets or art songs. There is no language
requirement so send your best work.


3) How many arias should I record?
There is no minimum or maximum. If you send more than one aria, then the judges will
have more to review.
